Battlefield Tour Film – WW2TV – The Liberation of Amfreville.
The village of Amfreville sits on the Breville Ridge, overlooking the bridges across the River Orne, the Caen Canal, part of DZ ‘N’ and also the area to the west. It was the task of the 9th Parachute Battalion to capture the village following it’s action at the Merville Battery. Due to their lack of numbers this proved an impossibility, but they did manage to take up position at the northern end of the village, in the Chateau d’Amfreville. There, they awaited the arrival of the Commandos of Lord Lovat’s 1st Special Service Brigade. This film for WW2TV explains the relief of the 9th Parachute Battalion and the liberation of the village.
